"Internews Ukraine"



International Public Organization "Internews Ukraine" (IUA) is one of the leading NGOs in Ukrainian media field, working for establishment of European values through development of successful media. Since 1996 the organization supports development of independent mass media in Ukraine and in some other CIS countries. 
As of December 2008 IUA implemented over 115 projects, held over 365 trainings and seminars; produced over 270 TV and 1308 radio programs covering political, economic and social topics; provided technical and legal support to 322 TV companies, 177 radio stations and 74 newspapers in Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

IUA training portfolio includes the following trainings: 

1.1. Trainings on journalism: standards of news journalism; investigative journalism; camera mastery; TV reportage; copyrighting; radio sound producing; TV design; modern technologies of radio on-air programming; effective newsroom management, litigation journalism.

1.2. Social journalism: coverage of HIV/AIDS related issues in media; coverage of TB related issues in print and on-line media; safe migration: how to state safe, working abroad; media coverage of climate change and energy saving technologies related issues.

1.3. New media: new media and multimedia content; on-line journalism; blogging as a promotion tool.

1.4. Media business: CRM. Management of relations with clients; radio station program management; image of TV channel as a non-material asset of TV station; successful advertising campaign: technologies, strategies, know-how; three principles of sales: subscription, retail, courier service; effective advertising sales; effective negotiations, WIN-WIN strategy.

1.5. NGOs, media business: fundraising; teambuilding as an element of corporate culture; project management.

1.6. Legal media trainings: legal regulation of advertising in media; law of Ukraine "On Advertising"; law of Ukraine "On elections", sponsorship regulation according to the legislation of Ukraine.

1.7. Trainings on establishment of effective relations with media. Awareness raising and promo campaigns. 

2 Public events, initiatives and projects organized and supported by IUA to improve news quality

2.1. Annual School of TV News. 5-week format of the school developed by the former Vice-President of CNN Ted Cavanaugh provides knowledge in news production and skills of a reporter, chief editor, anchor, TV camera man, and sound engineer.

2.2 TV debates: organizing, conducting, experience sharing. In 2004 IUA developed the format of the independent TV debates between the candidates running for presidency and created a pool of 5 national Ukrainian TV companies, 1 Russian TV

company and 1 Radio network company to broadcast debates before the second round of the election. In 2006 the organization conducted TV debates among the representatives of the political parties at 10 regional TV stations. In December 2007 IUA shared its experience with Georgian colleagues in preparing TV debates during 3-day training sessions conducted in Tbilisi.

2.3. Complex program "2012: Ukraine on air" developed by IUA in partnership with the Association "IKT-marketing" and Radio Broadcasting Concern, Radio Communication and Television of Ukraine close to the end of 2007. The program is
devoted to preparation to informational coverage of the Final Part of the European Football Championship in 2012.

2.4. Some of the most significant implemented projects: Creating Citizen Journalism in Belarus, Ukrainian and Polish Media in Partnership for Reform, "Publication of an Electronic Newsletter on HIV/AIDS Related Issues", "Coverage of Energy Saving Technologies and Climate Change Related Issues in Media", "Feasibility Study - Institute of Journalism at the Kyiv School of Economics."
Internews Ukraine2.5. International seminars: Regulation of on-line media: limits of freedom and willfulness; Corruption in media: situation in Ukraine and experience of Poland; Media Development in Europe and Ukraine: milestones of current agenda.
3 EU-related activity

Projects under implementation: "Monitoring of Ukrainian Media on EU Issues", "PR and Media Support to the EC Delegation in Belarus", "PR and Media Support to the EC Delegation in Ukraine."

Implemented projects funded by the Delegation of the European Commission to Ukraine: "EU Information Service for Journalists in Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus", "Organizing a Visit to the EU Institutions for Journalists from the Regional Ukrainian Media", Media in Building Voters' Awareness on Key Elections Issues, Non-Governmental Media Dialogue. Project "Europe in Ukrainian Media" implemented in cooperation with Polish Robert Schuman Foundation. 
4 Analytical activity: studies, surveys, monitoring, etc
Informational products (2007): Mass Media Development in Ukraine: An Overview; Ukraine's Media Market (General facts and trends); Ukrainian Internet Technologies and Telecommunications Market Review; Ukrainian Print Media Study; E-commerce in Ukrainian Internet, Profiles of Leading TV Channels of Ukraine.
Since September, 2007 IUA has been conducting monitoring of the coverage of EU-related integration issues of Ukraine in Ukrainian media. The project is being implemented under support of the Delegation of the European Commission to Ukraine. IUA monitors 6 biggest information agencies of Ukraine, 60 national print media, 22 regional print editions, 5 radio stations, over 25 programs on 10 TV channels and 20 Internet resources were monitored.

5 Development of on-line media environment in Ukraine

Implemented projects: "Telekritika" (www.telekritika.kiev.ua); Global Internet Policy Initiative (http://gipi.internews.ua), Media Centre "Kandydat" (www.kandydat.com.ua), Virtual Agency of News Project (http://van.internews.ua).

Other events: IUA ╕s a co-organizer of the "nonConference" of blogers ("BlogCamp") in CIS countries and Baltic States hosted in Kyiv in October 2007 and 2008. 

6 Media production and disseminating of information, PSAs production

6.1. Produced documentaries
  • "Orange revolution", in partnership with "Wilton films" (France - England);
  •  "Lessons of labour", produced for International Labour Organization within the project "Eradication of the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Ukraine."
6.2. Produced video spots
  • 8 PSAs, project "Media for Conscious Choice" implemented by IUA, OSCE, and "Freedom House" in 2006;
  • 4 PSAs produced for the World Bank and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of Ukraine, project "Consulting Services with regard to Information Television Campaign on Covering Social Assistance System in Ukraine";
  • 2 video and 2 audio PSAs on snap parliamentary election were produced upon request of International Renaissance Foundation in September 2007;
  • 4 video PSAs, produced for OSCE, project "Production of PSAs for Voters" in September 2007.
6.3. Produced TV programs
  • 10 films about social assistance system of Ukraine, produced for the World Bank and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of Ukraine, project "Consulting Services with regard to Information Television Campaign on Covering Social Provision in Ukraine";
  • Information-analytical TV program "Proyav tchasu", aired on the First National TV Channel, within the project "Media Centre "Kandydat."
